Endpoint Security Software Assumes a Lapse in Judgment

Friday, September 4th, 2009 by clear-blue-security

To Click or Not To Click?

That is the question racing through the mind of the second shift employee who is being suckered by a phishing URL. There is only one answer to the question but time and time again IT Professionals need to be prepared for a lapse in good judgment.

Despite training and constant reminders, employees fall victim to the simplest lures. We all want to know who Britney Spears is dating but it only takes one employee to click on the ‘find out’ hyperlink in a harmless looking email. Sadly, a sudden lapse in employee judgment can become tomorrow’s headline when data is stolen from an unsuspecting endpoint.

In the August 29th “State of Phishing” report published by Symantec, there was a 52 percent increase in phishing attacks from the previous month.

The problem is worsened with laptops and remote computers. When the cat’s away, the mice will definitely play. Most mobile employees take personal ownership of the corporate laptop; downloading music, games and visiting social networks. Outside the security of the corporate network, all goes undetected.

IT Professionals need to ensure endpoint security applications, browser applications and operating systems are up to date and running effectively. Clear Blue Security’s endpoint security software is the answer to immediately implementing security policies and monitoring out of network endpoints.

Is your business PCI Compliant? Weak security enables credit card hacks.

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009 by clear-blue-security

Is your business PCI Compliant?

More than 70 retailers and payment processors have disclosed security breaches since 2006, involving tens of millions of credit and debit card numbers, according to the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse. Meanwhile, many others likely have been breached and didn’t detect it. Even the companies that had the payment industry’s top rating for computer security, a seal of approval known as PCI compliance, have fallen victim to huge heists.

Companies that are not PCI compliant — including 10% of medium-sized and large retailers in the United States — face fines but are free to process credit and debit card payments.

PCI Compliance Security Software | Clear Blue Security

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009 by clear-blue-security

PCI compliance is critical for millions of businesses around the world.  What about yours?  And how does your network security provider help you to maintain PCI compliance?

Payment Card Industry (PCI) is a worldwide information security standard assembled by the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council (PCI SSC). The standard, which is currently comprised of 12 guidelines, was created to help organizations that process card payments prevent credit card fraud through increased controls around data and its exposure to compromise.

The standard applies to all organizations which hold, process, or pass cardholder information from any card branded with the logo of one of the card brands, including shopping cart sites, e-commerce and retail merchants and other merchant services providers.

Clear Blue Security addresses 5 of the critical PCI Compliance requirements. We also support periodic audits by generating reports and information to validate compliance to corporate policies and identify noncompliance issues prior to an audit.  Here’s how:

Build and Maintain a Secure Network

Requirement 1: Install and maintain a firewall configuration to protect cardholder data

Requirement 2: Do not use vendor-supplied defaults for system passwords and other security parameters

Clear Blue security helps maintain the integrity of the firewall by scanning for open ports that create outside access to the network. As part of the applied security policy, Clear Blue Security identifies blank passwords and checks against 25 other security best practices.

Maintain a Vulnerability Management Program

Requirement 5: Use and regularly update anti-virus software

Requirement 6: Develop and maintain secure systems and applications

Regularly Monitor and Test Networks

Requirement 11: Regularly test security systems and processes

Clear Blue Security monitors your entire network, including laptops, 24 hours a day - 7 days a week. As a SaaS enabled product, Clear Blue Security constantly provides updated security best practices and policies to your network.

IT Security Breaches More Severe | Clear Blue Security

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009 by clear-blue-security

IT security breaches have become more severe over the past 12 months — a time when most organizations have been under pressure to cut IT budgets. That’s not surprising as more mobile devices such as notebooks and smartphones make businesses more vulnerable and social networking sites pose new threats. Despite these budget cuts, IT professionals still rank security as a top priority, according to a new survey.

Data Protection: Simple Information Security Mistakes Can Cause Data Loss

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009 by clear-blue-security

80% of all breaches come from outside your organization.  Are you prepared to protect your data?

Van der Wel contributed to Verizon’s 2009 Data Breaches Investigations Report published in April, which overturned some long-held assumptions about security, most notably showing that nearly 80% of all network breaches come from outside the organization. According to conventional thinking, inside employees always posed the biggest threat, but the Verizon report showed a sharp rise in external hackers finding ways to compromise confidential records.

PCI Compliance: PCI Data Security Standard compliance: Setting the record straight

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009 by clear-blue-security

Is your network PCI Compliant?

Customers are becoming more aware of the need to guard personal information and to demand a high level of data security around the electronic transactions they make. PCI Compliance was created to be the standard and measure against which merchants can be judged on security, and a tool to help them achieve security standards.

With high-profile corporate data breaches — such as the TJX Companies Inc. breach that exposed more than 45 million credit and debit card holders to identity fraud — the PCI Data Security Standard is top-of-mind for IT executives. Unfortunately, PCI compliance is often misunderstood, causing confusion among those who must comply with the standard. This has resulted in numerous myths.

Business Network Monitoring: Virginia Medical Records Hacked

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009 by clear-blue-security

Is your business network safe from hackers?  Are you sure about that?

Last week, a group of hackers broke into a website that belongs to the State of Virginia used by pharmacists to track prescription drug abuse. They deleted the records of more than 8 million patients and replaced the site’s homepage with a ransom note demanding $10 million for the return of the records.

All too often, businesses believe that their network is safe from hackers and have to find out the hard way that it isn’t.  Data breaches open the door to the theft of things like confidential records, sensitive information, thousands or even millions of customer records and more, costing businesses millions of dollars in resources and lost revenue.  How much can your business afford to lose?
